The Sound Design Efflorescence: beyond an Ocularcentric Academy

Description: Stephen Spielberg once said, “The sound and music are 50% of the entertainment in a movie.” This quotation (and variants thereof) from a renowned film director begs the question: why the need to mention it in the first place? The reason is obvious for sound designers, and composer/producers of film and game music-sound: many of us live in an ocularcentric world. Yet, the term “sound design” is becoming commonplace as digital technologies have revolutionized not just audio production, but the breakdown of binary oppositions such as “music vs. noise” and “composition vs. improvisation. This roundtable is for media librarians involved or interested in developing sound design programs at their college or university, the challenges they face from stodgy 19th century music departments, and the ocularcentrism of the academy.
