Historically, LGBTQ+ individuals have been underrepresented in research, at best. At worst, they have been exploited and stigmatized through research. Pursuing diversity in research participation requires reflection on the factors that prevent the full participation of LGBTQ+ individuals in research. A major factor in facilitating this participation is the language that we use to communicate with potential participants. Language choices that may go unnoticed by some can make the difference between LGBTQ+ individuals feeling safe and respected, or feeling further alienated. Join this session to learn more about current terminology, best practices for gathering data from LGBTQ+ individuals, and to learn how to advocate for more inclusive language in your own participant-facing materials.
