In 2022, more than 2.5 million cases of syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia were reported in the United States. Anyone who is sexually active, including oral sex, can get a sexually transmitted infection (STI). The most alarming increases in STIs are diagnoses of syphilis and congenital syphilis, and we are seeing increasing rates of syphilis and congenital syphilis in Virginia. In this STI plenary, I will review the current STI epidemic including Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B and C and explain the scope of the problem of STIs in the United States and Virginia. We will also cover: risk factors for acquiring an STI, the modes of transmission for STIs, and the ways to screen or test for STIs. For STI Prevention, I will highlight clinician and consumer roles. Many medications to treat STIs are available on the Virginia Medication Assistant Program (MAP) formulary to treat STIs for people with HIV coinfection who are enrolled in Virginia Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program Part B.
