Course Overview
The Virginia Infection Prevention Training Center’s module, Antimicrobial Stewardship for Long-Term Care Settings, provides healthcare professionals with essential strategies to optimize antibiotic use in LTCFs. Participants will examine common infections that prompt antibiotic prescriptions, explore challenges to stewardship program implementation, and identify key measures for program success.
Target Audience
Target audience for this course are healthcare professionals who are or will be directly involved in infection prevention activities in their facilities. These are infection prevention professionals who have participated in and gained considerable knowledge through specialized infection and control training and who have minimal to moderate practice or fieldwork experience with infection prevention and control concepts.
Audience examples include advanced beginner to proficient infection preventionists and HAI/AR/IPC staff, novice to proficient healthcare or public health epidemiologists, and antimicrobial stewardship program pharmacists.
Overall Learning Objectives
- Identify the risks associated with antibiotics for patients in long-term care facilities (LTCF)
- Define unique aspects of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in LTCF
- Discuss common infections in LTCF for which antibiotics are prescribed
- Discuss barriers to AMS programs in LTCF
- Discuss measures used to determine the success of an AMS program for LTCF
- Discuss the importance of educating and engaging residents and family members
