Course Overview
The Virginia Infection Prevention Training Center’s intermediate module, Hand Hygiene Monitoring, explores the essential components of monitoring and improving hand hygiene adherence. Learners will compare observation methods, define key data collection strategies, and identify moments for hand hygiene. The course addresses structural and behavioral barriers to compliance and provides actionable insights on how to deliver meaningful feedback, establish baseline compliance rates, and develop effective tracking systems.
Target Audience
Target audience for this course are healthcare professionals who are or will be directly involved in infection prevention activities in their facilities. These are infection prevention professionals who have participated in and gained considerable knowledge through specialized infection and control training and have minimal to moderate practice or fieldwork experience with infection prevention and control concepts.
Audience examples: Advanced Beginner to Proficient Infection Preventionist, Advanced Beginner to Proficient HAI/AR/IPC staff, Novice to Proficient Healthcare/Public Health Epidemiologist, Infectious Disease /Antimicrobial Stewardship Program Pharmacist.
Overall Learning Objectives
- Discuss and indicate the importance of monitoring and feedback of hand washing compliance and the role it plays in IPC
- Summarize the obstacles (structural, organizational, cognitive, and social) to HH compliance in healthcare settings
- Compare and contrast different HH adherence monitoring methods
- Define key components of HH data collection
- Summarize the key moments in which HH should be performed and observed
- Describe how to determine baseline compliance rates and how to set goals for future compliance
- Describe how to develop tools and systems to monitor, track, and feed back HH data and areas for improvement
- Identify key stakeholders who will receive data and opportunities for improving compliance
- Outline when and where hand washing with soap and water is preferred over the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer
