Course Overview
The Virginia Infection Prevention Training Center’s module on Hospital Antimicrobial Stewardship and Infection Prevention Programs: Harnessing the Synergy provides detailed information regarding infection prevention programs (IPPs) and antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs). Topics include pillars of infection management, key aspects of hospital programs, staffing recommendations, reporting and regulatory requirements, and implementation strategies.
Target Audience
Target audience for this course are healthcare professionals who are or will be directly involved in infection prevention activities in their facilities. These are infection prevention professionals who have participated in and gained considerable knowledge through specialized infection and control training and who have minimal to moderate practice or fieldwork experience with infection prevention and control concepts.
Audience examples include advanced beginner to proficient infection preventionists and HAI/AR/IPC staff, novice to proficient healthcare or public health epidemiologists, and antimicrobial stewardship program pharmacists.
Overall Learning Objectives
- Compare key similarities and differences between infection prevention programs (IPP) and antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASP)
- Compare and contrast reporting requirements/opportunities (NHSN) and program activity requirements (CMS, TJC)
- Discuss specific areas where IPPs and ASPs can collaborate
- Discuss an integrated IPP and ASP model and how organizations can move to such a model
