Prevention of Multidrug Resistant Organisms (MDROs)

Course Overview 

The Virginia Infection Prevention Training Center’s intermediate module, Prevention of Multidrug Resistant Organisms (MDROs), provides a detailed overview of the epidemiology and containment strategies for key MDROs, including MRSA, VRE, C. difficile, CRE, and C. auris. Participants will gain insights into resistance mechanisms, public health concerns, and effective infection prevention strategies such as point prevalence testing, isolation protocols, and antimicrobial stewardship.

Target Audience

Target audience for this course are healthcare professionals who are or will be directly involved in infection prevention activities in their facilities. These are infection prevention professionals who have participated in and gained considerable knowledge through specialized infection and control training and have minimal to moderate practice or fieldwork experience with infection prevention and control concepts.

Audience examples: Advanced Beginner to Proficient Infection Preventionist, Advanced Beginner to Proficient HAI/AR/IPC staff, Novice to Proficient Healthcare/Public Health Epidemiologist, Infectious Disease /Antimicrobial Stewardship Program Pharmacist. 

Overall Learning Objectives

• Discuss the epidemiology of clinically important MDROs: MRSA, VRE, C. difficile, and CRE
• Discuss the resistance mechanisms of CRE and C. auris and why their spread is so concerning from a public health perspective
• Discuss the prevalence of C. auris in the US and implications for infection prevention programs
• Discuss containment strategies for MDROs including point prevalence testing, isolation, and antimicrobial stewardship
